ECCK BECOMES ACE
If you recall I asked for suggestions as far as a name for the club and Journal/Newsletter for
I didn’t think ECCK was quite right. I received about 11 suggestions and the one | picked
came from Denis Zoring. He suggested Associated Collectors of Encased (ACE). Denis also
suggested the title for the Journal/Newsletter, The Casement. This was choosen from about
10 suggestions.
Thanks to all that sent in suggestions and thanks to Denis. He gets a pat on the back and the
satisfaction of telling his grand kids that he was the originator behind the names of the
Journal/Newsletter and the organization.
Below is a copy of what Coin World put in to plug ACE. At the time it was still called
ECCK. The article resulted in 12 new members and I would think several more will join
because of the article. I also sent a request to the ANA, NOW and Numismatic News asking
that they mention our new club. This too will generate some new members.
As for the members that joined from the article kindly send me your collecting interest if you
have not done so as well as your free classified which will be good through Number 5 issue.
As you are aware from this issue I just tape the cover and out it goes. If you would like it
sent in an envelope please advise. The advantage of the tape method is that it is cheaper.
The disadvantage is that you will not always get a clean copy plus for some there is a
security concern, the fewer that know you are a collector the better. This of course applies to
the non-collecting fratenty.
Our goa! for membership in 1995 is 50 and for 1996 is 75. So kindly spread the word.
Thanks to all that have joined. A copy of an application is on the last page.
Your membership card along with your ACE number is on page 5.

New encased coin club founding.....A new club for encased coin collectors is being founded
by Jerry Binsfeld, a collector and mail-bid dealer from Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
The new organization, called Encased Coin Collector's Klub, will be educational, non-
profit and devoted to identifying mavericks and expanding the exonumia field of encased coin
collecting.
Binsfeld said he believes there in a need for such a club because the field is popular to
Many collectors. According to Binsfeld, there may be 20,000 to 25,000 different encased
coins to collect (continued on page 5)

Editor's Message
Welcome to the first Journal/Newsletter of the Associated Collectors of Encased (ACE)
Volume 1, Number 1, August, 1995. We are hoping this is the start of somcthing good. ,
The exonumia field of encased coins has been neglected and its time it comes of ape
and gets some respect. There are a large number of collectors and there arc an cnormous
amount of encased coins just waiting to be identified, studied and appreciated. Many
encased arc quite rare and many are underpriced.
We can all appreciate an Unc. Encased Indian Cent, the many odd shaped cleverly
done encasements and the many catchy slogans and vast varicty of businesses and clubs
represented. Its important that some order and direction is given to this collecting ficld.
Hopefully ACE and its organization can bring collectors together and serve as a central
source not only for information but also for buying, selling and trading.
In future issues ] hope to follow the index and J especially would like to emphasize
three important sections. The first is the maverick column, please read that section about how
to submit. The second is the information section. Members should feel free to submit any
articles on encased from information on a particular advertiser to broader topics of coliector
interests. And third, the latest finds and collector profile section. Kindly ict me know if you
find any encasements, where, the cost, the type, etc. Under collector profile | will senc out
an information sheet and from those J get back | will put together a short article featuring that
collector. | did this for the Racine Numismatic Society when | was the editor of the
Newsletter. It worked out well as long as members are willing to complete the sheet. Picase
keep in mind any articles should be camera ready, typed, so 1 can just included it in the
Journal/Newsletter. ] don’t care to retype everything ] receive for obvious reasons.
Also, | am open to suggestions on what we can include in the Journal/Newsictter. If
you have any ideas or suggestions for improvements please advise.
Several collectors have asked me why I started this encased coin collectors ciud. My
answer is that 1 feel a club is needed to put order into this exonumia field and to have a
central source for identifying mavericks and for the additional reasons given carlicr. | am
also going to retire from education in three or four years and this project will structure my
time. Presently, ] am super busy. And finally, @ selfish reason. ] am putting together a
book on the known encased coins in the USA by state. J recently put 2 Wisconsin listing
together and now I am working on this larger task. 1 want the book to be as comnpicie as
possible. This organization will help me in this endeavor. As for making moncy on the book
I don't think J will. I am doing it for the challenge and just to contribute to the hobpy. |
enjoy all areas of exonumia and have since about 1978. 1 got interested in the cncased arca 1m
1980 when | was offered an encased coin from Fond du Lac, Wis. and from then on | was
hooked. As for the book I have had great cooperation from collectors around the U.S. I
probably have about 20 collectors who took time to send me a listing of their encascmcnts.
still could use more. If you have any please send a list my way. All contributors will be .
acknowledged in the book. As far as my completion date 1 was intending to have jt complele
in 1995 but becasuse of the large number of new finds ] have moved the completion date t0
sometime in 1997. I hope to have it in a hard cover but | have not looked into cost this
could change.
And, finally thanks for joining, hop aboard, take part, contribute and watch ACE pinw

Some of these are mavericks. An organized collector base working together could
possibly identify a substantial number of these, according to Binsfeld.
ECCK will have a quarterly newsletter or journal including free classified ads and low
advertising rates for members. The club will provide a base for buying, selling and trading.
Binsfeld plans to have the club meet annually either at the Spring Central States
Numismatics Association convention or at the annual Chicago collectible show in March.
Interested collectors can send $7 for a one-year membership and a letter stating their
encased collecting interests to Binsfeld at P.O. Box 191, Pleasant Prairie, Wis. 53158

POTPOURJ/INFORMATION
Who was Earl Fanhauser? Earl was a Fort Wayne, Indiana enterprencur who
bad a side business in the 1950's and 1960's of encased coin advertising. He actively
solicted businesses throughout Fort Wayne, the midwest and vanous other slates. He
was a coin collector so he had a good number of coin dealers who used the encased as a
media of advertising.
A large number of pieces have his name af the bottom along with Fort Wayne, |
in very small letters on the advertising side of the encasement. Most if not all of his
encased are round, 32mm in sive with an aluminum encasement and the slogan, "KEEP
ME AND NEVER GO BROKE" (KMANGB). The inscription is Jocated on a horseshoe
with a four leaf clover below which is of several varicties.
The purchasing price for most of the Fankhauser pieces are from $2.) to $20.00
pending town, topic and denomination of the encased coin. As for denomination
Fankhauser allegedly produced a gold-colored 25 cent encasement, (however I have
never encountered one nor do | know of anyone who has) a Canadian ceni encasement,
a U.S. nickel and a U.S. dime encasement. Other then that the 600 plus that he had
produced were all encased Lincoln cents.
Recently | purchased » Fankhauser picce with a 1961 Panama one cenicsime
encased with the advertising of the Roses/Harvey & Patsy/Box 577 La Mesa, Calif.
(pictured). It appears to be a specimen that was in the initial run for it has no tool
marks or looseness al the point of attachment between the coin and the encascment.
The coin may have been in a batch of Lincoln cents that were being encased and was
inadvertently done or a group were purposely encased. | am not sure which nor do |
have any figures on the mintage. The Roses were coin dealers.
The condition of many of the Fankhauser picces are in the AU/Unc category.
Most seem to be plentiful so | am guessing he probably had 1000 plus made for cach
client. But again, ] have pever scen any mintage figures so this is a guess.
If any reader wants a partial listing of what Fankhauser produced, Brace W.
Smith wrote a nice article in the Oct , 1993 issue of TAMS Journal, titled: TRIAL
LISTING OF ENCASED COINS MADE BY EARL FANKHAUSER of Fort Wayne,
Indiana. In the article Smith listed about 300. Bryan Ryker of Fort Wayne is currently
updating this list for TAMS and at last count he is at 600 different. Perhaps
Bryan will Iet us print his work as well. We are using Bryan's suggested two letter
system in listing mavericks. He would like all encased listed this way. His idca is worth
looking into. . Cad,
The Panama picce referred to in the above article. Earl Kankhauser Fort Wayne |
appears at the very bottom dircctly below and starting with the first seven in 577.

About the Fall Chicago show-Joc] Reznick reports that the Fall Show is something new and
that they still will have the March show. By the way during the March show the ACH
organization will hold their first meeting. It will most likely be on Saturday and will be heic
in the auction room. Time and date will be forthcoming in the next issuc of The lincasemenm.
The date of the Fall show happens to land on opening day of the Wisconsin Deer
season of which | participate in. | guess ] will just have to Jeave early and make the Sunday
datc. Opening day is always the best for deer hunting and for buying cxonumia at collectible
shows. Maybe | should flip a coin. Wither way | enjoy both events.
Does anyone know where encased cents are made other then Kewaunee, Wisconsin, if
so kindly let the cditor know. A future project of ACI: is to have an encased made, some-
thing which will be on the agenda for our first meeting.
